Wayne Gretzky is considered the greatest hockey player of all time.
The Canadian didn’t hold back when he talked about Peter Forsberg.
– He is the whole package, says Gretzky to Expressen.
Wayne Gretzky retired from hockey in 1999 after 21 seasons in the NHL. Peter Forsberg came to the NHL in 1995. The two great players thus got four years on the ice at the same time, even though they never played on the same team.
Gretzky vs Foppa
In the context of hockey, however, they bumped into each other for several years after Gretzky put his skates on the shelf. The Canadian returned to the NHL in 2000 as a minority owner of the Phoenix Coyotes, and as a coach from 2005. “The Great One” had great admiration for Foppa, something he expressed several times.

Like the time Anaheim hosted Phoenix in November 2007. Gretzky’s men won the game 6-5 and were chatty and in good spirits. A match Forsberg couldn’t play, but Wayne heaped praise on the Swede.
– He and Börje Salming were unique talents who could combine finesse with tough, physical play. A lot of people say that Swedish players don’t have those qualities, but these two guys proved the opposite.
– They didn’t back down from anyone. They stuck to their own powerful game and won the respect of everyone in the NHL, Gretzky told Expressen.
Powerful tribute
The former center described Foppa as “an original”.
– He is “the complete package”. By that I mean he’s good at everything. And he has a presence, an aura both among teammates and fans, that you don’t see in many other players.

Forsberg’s future was at this time very uncertain due to his severe foot injury. Whether he could continue playing was far from certain, and most things pointed to him having played his last game in the NHL. Something that worried Gretzky.
– Peter Forsberg is one of the biggest poster names we have. He will leave a huge void, no doubt about that. We will all miss him and his artistry in the arenas around the NHL, he told the evening newspaper.
