Fans of the sci-fi classic Battlestar Galactica can breathe a sigh of relief: There is finally news about the planned series. Work on the new edition is underway and it is “in top shape,” as producer Sam Esmail revealed.
What kind of series is this? The project is supposed to be a series in the universe of Battlestar Galactica or Kampfstern Galactica, as the original from the 70s was called in Germany. Robert Moore’s reboot ran from 2004 to 2009 and is considered one of the best sci-fi series ever.
The new series was announced in September 2019 for Peacock, an American streaming provider (via Filmstarts).
Sam Esmail, who is known for the thriller series Mr. Robot, was hired as producer. He told The Hollywood Reporter in October 2019 that he shuddered at the term “reboot” for the project.
After all, Ronald D. Moore hit the jackpot with his new edition. Instead of a simple reboot, Esmail plans to further explore the “rich and interesting mythology” of Battlestar Galactica. Since then, there has only been sporadic information about the project – until now (via 3DJuegos).
After the writers’ strike, there is now a draft of the script
What does Esmail say now? In an interview with Deadline on October 25, Sam Esmail spoke about Rami Malek, the star of his series Mr. Robot, his upcoming film Leave The World Behind – and the planned series of Battlestar Galactica.
Apparently, the double strike of actors and screenwriters in Hollywood, which began in May 2023, stalled work on the series. You can read more about the strike from your colleagues at Moviepilot.
Well, I can’t speak for the film, but as far as the TV series is concerned, we are working on it. In fact, I just read a great draft and it’s in really good shape. Now that the strike is over – at least the WGA strike is over – we are now back to development.
Fans can breathe a sigh of relief at this point, because the project is apparently still taking place. It is unclear what the situation is with the planned film, which has been in development limbo since 2010. This should share a universe with the series reboot.
With Alien: Romulus, another reboot of a cult classic is currently in development. The film series desperately needed that because one title was so poorly received that director James Cameron lost interest in making another Alien film.
“You will ruin the series” – James Cameron warned against a film, but the SF saga had to pay the price
