There is actually a significant 5th Hobbit in the Lord of the Rings universe, but he does not appear in the films

There is another hobbit in Frodo’s circle of friends who does not appear in the Lord of the Rings films. But without him, the story might have turned out differently.

When you think of The Lord of the Rings, Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin immediately spring to mind – and of course Aragorn, Gandalf and Legolas. But one brave hobbit often goes unmentioned: Fredegar Bolger. Although he does not appear in Peter Jackson’s films, he plays a crucial role in JRR Tolkien’s work.

The brave hobbit that many do not know

Who exactly is Fredegar? He was a close friend of Frodo Baggins and the group. He was affectionately called Fatty by his friends. Although he did not seek adventure like his friends, he played a key role in the early events of the Fellowship of the Ring. While Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin decided to leave the Shire and travel to Rivendell, Fredegar decided to stay in the Shire.

Why did he stay behind? He stayed behind in Frodo’s house to create the impression that Frodo was still in the Shire. He took on this role to deceive the Nazgûl and other threats so that Frodo and his companions could begin their journey in peace. This was a strategic decision to throw the pursuers off on a false trail.

What important role does he play? He is incredibly brave. Fredegar warned the residents in time about the Nazgûl, who were coming to the Shire in search of Frodo and the Ring. When the Nazgûl searched Frodo’s house, Fredegar escaped through the back door and raised the alarm by sounding the Horn of Buckland. This caused the Nazgûl to retreat.

During the time when Saruman and his minions occupied the Shire, Fredegar was the leader of a resistance group to defend the Shire. He was eventually captured and later freed by Frodo.

Why is he missing from the movies? It was deliberately left out. The films focus heavily on the main characters and the main plot lines. Many subplots were shortened or omitted.

Fredegar Bolger may not be the most famous hobbit, but his deeds have had a profound impact on the Shire and the history of Middle Earth. It is time to give this unsung hero the recognition he deserves. One of the most iconic images of the Lord of the Rings trilogy was not makeup, but real
