Today. Baldur’s Gate 3 will be released on August 3rd. Many players apparently want to start right on time for the start at 5:00 p.m. Now there are reports of problems with the servers.
What’s going on at release?
Are the Steam servers down? No, at least not for everyone. In all of our tests, we had access to the official Steam website, were able to log in, start games and use downloads.
However, users on Reddit report that the download is extremely slow. The alle disturbances.de page shows an increase in the number of problem reports on Steam since around 5:00 p.m. Accordingly, the following are affected:
Update at 6:50 p.m.: Slow download speeds in particular are repeatedly mentioned as a problem. This indicates a problem with the servers. There is no official statement from Steam yet. Make the best use of the time to update your graphics card driver.
The rashes on Google with search queries about server problems on Steam are also growing worldwide. We cannot say whether this is actually due to Baldur’s Gate 3 or whether there is another problem behind it. A similar situation existed with Sons of the Forest.
Since not everyone experiences the issue, we recommend restarting the client if possible. Otherwise it keeps trying, possibly the rush is simply causing overloads and timeouts.
Just in time for the launch there is a new trailer:
Download slow? Baldur’s Gate 3 requires 122GB
The problem with Baldur’s Gate 3 is that the game comes with a massive download size. Although there was early access for years, the developers advised uninstalling early access and deleting all saves. Otherwise there could be problems.
However, since the game was still in Early Access status until the release, every owner or pre-orderer would have downloaded the old version. So everyone had to wait until 5pm. The release was global, so worldwide at the same time. According to the developers, the problem was with Steam.
Due to the enormous size, however, many players, especially in Germany, will probably not be able to play directly on the release day anyway – especially if they come home later.
We therefore recommend simply letting the download run overnight, including the driver update for Nvidia graphics cards. So you can gamble relaxed on Friday or at the weekend. This is only annoying for those who have taken extra vacation.
