The science fiction series For All Mankind is already starting its 4th season this month and yet hardly anyone is talking about it in Germany. Wrongly! It all begins with the well-known moon landing in 1969 – except that it is the Russians who arrive on Earth’s satellite first, before the Americans. This is the initial situation that sets off a completely new space race, which is shown over decades through the exciting personal fates of astronauts (Joel Kinnaman) to NASA ground personnel (Wrenn Schmidt).

For All Mankind takes some time to gain momentum at the beginning, but then increases its science fiction content from season to season embeds it politically in an absolutely credible alternative sci-fi historiography one that convincingly portrays lunar colonies and Mars missions.

And that has far-reaching, warlike consequences for many parties.

The second season, which started this year, develops the series even more visually and in terms of character. The complexity of the narrative puts Foundation on a level with complex works like Frank Herbert’s Dune.
