Then your home insurance does not apply this Christmas: “Don’t you have…”

Then your home insurance does not apply this Christmas Dont

Now Christmas is around the corner and many homes are lit up in the winter darkness with Christmas lights and decorations. But when light travels forward, the risk of fire increases.

Having home insurance can be good if the accident is at home. It could be, for example, fire, water damage or burglary, in which case you will receive compensation for the value that has been lost or for the cost of repairing what has been damaged. If you don’t have home insurance, an accident can become an expensive story.

There is no law that requires you to have home insurance, but in many rental housing and condominium associations it is a requirement to have home insurance.

Common mistakes can cause fire

News24 have talked to Bertil Jansson, construction technician at Länsförsäkringar, who tells you how you can decorate for Christmas in a fire-safe way.

– When it comes to Christmas decorations and Christmas time, there is a lot of light coming through and the risk of fire increases, he says.

He shares some tips:

  • Never place candles closer than ten centimeters apart.
  • Make sure the candles are steady.
  • Make sure there are no flammable materials near the candles, such as curtains, tablecloths and moss.
  • Make sure to put matches and lighters in a safe place.
  • A candle spreads heat in several directions at the same time, and if the candles are too close together, the heat spread can cause several candles to burn together and become a large candle that cannot be handled.

    – A common cause of fire is that the heat radiation melts the higher light, then the light tilts down and ignites material next to it, he says.

Then your home insurance does not apply

A rule of thumb when it comes to lights is to not leave them unattended and if you happen to do that anyway, well then it could cost you dearly.

    – There are special care requirements that state that you must not leave fire and candles unattended. If you have not followed the due diligence requirements, the compensation can be reduced, says Bertil Jansson.

Some other important due diligence requirements are:

  • Lock all doors and adjust all windows when no one is home.
  • Do not leave keys hidden next to the home.
  • Lock the bicycle with an approved bicycle lock.
  • Lock the car and leave no valuables in it.
