When you travel abroad with your dog, there is a risk that the dog will get diseases that are not found in Sweden. By vaccinating the dog, you reduce the risk of your dog becoming ill and of diseases spreading.
The vet Sara Klinga Myr tells in TV4’s News morning that a disease that you really want to avoid is rabies. A shot against rabies must be taken 21 days before you go out and travel with your dog, according to EU rules.
When it comes to passports, the dog can have it issued by the veterinarian and this applies to the dog’s entire life.
– You always need a passport, regardless of where you are going. Even if you’re only going to Norway or Åland, you must have a passport, she says in the program.

But it is not always a good idea to bring the dog on the trip, says Klinga Myr. If you want to travel abroad with your pet, you need to plan it well in advance so that it is both legal and good for the animal.
– Sometimes the solution is to let the dog or cat stay at home. If you are traveling on a shorter trip, it might be nicer to get a cat or dog sitter than to take it with you on a short trip.
