That crime is increasing in Sweden is nothing new. In 2023, the number of reported crimes rose to 1.51 million, which was an increase of four percent compared to the year before, according to statistics from The Crime Prevention Council (GREAT).

Now the police are taking a step to inform more easily but also to get help from the public in the event of a serious crime in progress, it states Swedish Radio.

A new initiative has been taken by the police as a result of the crime wave that hit Sweden last year.

In order to more easily inform the public about serious crime and to get tips from the public more easily, the mobile app 112 will now be used.

Under the “Current” tab in the 112 app, you are informed about ongoing crime in the vicinity of where you are.

In that view, you will now not only get information that may be necessary, for example if you need to stay indoors or if an operation has ended. You will also be able to choose to inform the police about everything from information about the crime and observations to other tips.

In this way, the police hope to be more accessible to the public at the same time as the citizens are protected and the police can hopefully get the necessary help to clear up serious crime.

“The 112 app, which has previously informed the public about traffic accidents and fires, will now also be able to inform about serious violent crimes such as explosions and shootings. The 112 app will also be able to be used by the police to search for tips and observations in ongoing investigations , which has already been tested recently.”, the police write on their website.

Magnus Jansson Klarin works as a press spokesperson for the Police in the central region, and for SR he explains the change that will now take place.

– This is something that we started with right now during the autumn. It is as a result of the wave of violence we had last year.

– We will be able to use this for ongoing events that affect the public. It may be that you need to block off areas because you have an object, for example, but also call for tips and observations, which we see as a great advantage.

In the past, among other things, the event “Explosion” has been added, which goes out to the app’s users throughout the country. The police have also discussed whether the incident “Shooting” should be added, but no decision has yet been made.

At the police station homepage they write which areas are the first to test the functions of the app.

“With the help of the SOS Alarms 112 app, the police in Region Mitt are now starting to inform and seek help from the public in Västmanland County, Uppsala County and Gävleborg County.”
