In March 2024, a total of 354,641 people were registered as unemployed, according to The employment agency. The corresponding figure for the same time period last year was 335,328 people.

And being unemployed, of course, means great financial challenges. But did you know that, if you have been dismissed and meet certain criteria, you can receive thousands of Swedish kronor in compensation?

New conditions for severance pay

In 2022, the conditions for severance pay (AGB), which cover privately employed workers, were changed.

“The background to the changes in Severance Allowance, AGB, is that changes to LAS came into force in 2022 and as a result of the signed labor market partners, LO, Swedish Enterprise and PTK, a new main agreement on security, adjustment and employment protection. The new main agreement, which entered into force on 1 October 2022, also brought changes to the collectively agreed insurance Severance pay, AGB”, explains Afa insurances in a press release.

Criteria for receiving the General Terms and Conditions compensation

The collective agreement insurance, which is the severance allowance AGB, is managed by Afa försäkringar and applies to workers at private companies and can provide compensation if you have been dismissed from a permanent or fixed-term employment due to lack of work or illness.

Here are all the criteria:

  • You must have reached the age of 40 before you were dismissed, but must not have reached the age of 65.
  • You must have been employed for at least 50 months at one or more workplaces that have severance pay insurance with Afa Insurance.
  • You must have been dismissed due to lack of work. If your workplace is covered by the new main agreement, mentioned above, you may also be entitled to compensation if you have been dismissed due to illness or terminated a limited-term employment.
  • The insurance does not apply if:

  • You receive an offer of a new job with the same employer, with the same working hours, within three months of your last day of employment. It does not matter if you declined this employment.
  • If the company you worked for gets a new owner and you are offered and start a new job there.
  • You are laid off, on short-term leave or on notice.
