Until very recently, it was almost impossible to get your hands on a new electric car with a reasonable range for under half a million kroner.
However, the situation has started to change, and there are now good electric cars on the market from around SEK 300,000.
In the future, however, prices will be even lower, and Volkswagen is now aiming to build an electric car that costs under 20,000 euros – the equivalent of 230,000 kroner.

Electric car for 20,000 euros in 2027
Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schäfer has previously promised news of a cheap electric car from the brand before the summer, and now he has delivered.
The company will build an electric car that will cost 20,000 euros, and will also be built in Europe. The premiere will take place in 2027.
– Despite the attractive price, our vehicles will set standards in the entry-level segment in terms of technology, design, quality and customer experience. The world premiere is planned for 2027, says Thomas Schäfer in a statement.

The French are ahead
Since before, Volkswagen and its sister brands Skoda and Cupra have been working on electric cars for around 25,000 euros, which will be shown at the end of 2025.
The Stellantis group has already reached that price range with the new ë-C3, which has a base price of 23,300 euros down in Europe. In Sweden, the model starts at SEK 299,990.
The next milestone is therefore to build an electric car in Europe with a basic price of around 20,000 euros, and Volkswagen is not alone in that ambition.
Renault has already shown a concept car for the next generation of the Twingo small car, which is an electric car with clear features of the first Twingo from 1993.
The production of the new Renault Twingo is to start in 2026, which means that it beats Volkswagen’s electric smallest by a year.
