Then the medicine can become dangerous: “Can lead to stomach ulcers”

Many Swedes use the drug Treo several days a week – some several times a day.
What not everyone knows is that extensive consumption of the effervescent tablet can lead to drug-induced headaches and stomach problems.
– It’s not about asking whether you can take a Treo every day, but why you take a Treo every day, says Marcus Olausson, registered doctor and specialist in general medicine.

Treo is a pain-relieving drug that contains aspirin and caffeine. Like other pain-relieving medicines, it can be taken for, among other things, fever, pain and menstruation.

Taking a tablet every now and then is not dangerous, but on the other hand, one should watch out for extensive consumption.

– A high intake of acetylsalicylic acid over time can be irritating to the gastric mucosa and in the worst case can lead to gastric bleeding (stomach ulcer, editor’s note), says Marcus Olausson, registered doctor and specialist in general medicine.

May trigger headaches

Long-term use of Treo can also lead to so-called medication-induced headache, i.e. pain and discomfort in the head caused by a large intake of medication.

– You simply have a persistent headache and then take medicine to get better, but instead the medicine maintains the headache. That risk exists with all painkillers, and it is relatively common in society, says Marcus Olausson.

However, how you are affected by long-term use is individual. Some can consume large amounts without being affected. What is known is that older people in particular are at greater risk of suffering from stomach ulcers, and it can also affect the kidneys.

Good think about the reason

According to Marcus Olausson, if you consume a lot of Treo, it may be good to think about why it is so.

– You shouldn’t consume painkillers every day, and if it’s the case that you have bodily pain all the time, you should consult with your doctor about the underlying cause instead of “making up the pig” and taking Treo every day. It’s not about asking if you can take a Treo every day, but why you take a Treo every day.
