Ice cold, mild – and ice cold again.

Before long, a strong northerly wind will descend over the country, bringing arctic air with it.

– On Tuesday, we will probably all be aware of the cold in our elongated country, says meteorologist Lasse Rydqvist.

A cold snap is advancing from the north across both North America and Scandinavia.

The arctic air brings the temperature down sharply and already on Sunday we can expect around minus 30 degrees in northernmost Sweden. The ice cold then also moves down to the southern parts of the country, and hits with full force on Tuesday.

– And on Wednesday we can probably approach minus 40 degrees in some parts of northern Sweden, says Lasse Rydqvist, meteorologist at Klart.

How cold it gets depends on the cloudiness. In the parts of the country where the weather will be clear, it will be cold, which is estimated to be in northernmost Sweden, Dalafjällen and Värmland.

But even in Götaland it can get down to minus 10-18 degrees.

Snow and slippery roads this weekend

In terms of traffic, the change in weather can cause problems during the weekend.

During Saturday evening and Sunday night it will drop towards freezing temperatures in the south, which can lead to slippery roads when it freezes. Then it may be good to be extra careful in traffic.

There may also be some rain in Götaland on Saturday before the temperature has time to drop.

– But after that it will only snow from Sunday into next week, says Lasse Rydqvist.

Eastern Svealand and eastern Götaland will receive the most snowfall due to wind pulling in moist air from the Baltic Sea.

Colder than normal – the fourth month in a row

Earlier in the winter, Siberian cold moved in from the northeast. But now it rather comes from the north, according to Lasse Rydqvist.

– It is really arctic cold. On Monday, the change to real winter weather is a fact throughout the country.

Because of the arctic winds, it will mean that it will be an unusually cold January.

– It will probably be the fourth month in a row that is colder than normal throughout the country. We’ll see how long this strong cold lasts, says Lasse Rydqvist.

October, November and December were colder than normal, measured over a reference period from 1991 to 2020. Now January can be too.
