The fact that the 3G and 2G networks are to be shut down has probably been missed by few. This means that a number of different technology gadgets can stop working, such as old mobile phones, security alarms and routers.

Sweden’s largest telecom operators have different timetables for when the shutdown will take place. According to the Swedish Post and Telecommunications Board, the 2G networks are expected to have been shut down by the end of 2025.
News24 have spoken to Telia, Telenor, Tele2 and Tre to hear what applies to each telecom company. Common to the large telecom companies is that the decommissioning must be completed by 2025.

Then Telia and Telenor will phase out the 3G network
– The decommissioning is taking place gradually throughout the country and the goal is for the 3G network to be completely decommissioned by the end of 2025. After that, the 2G network will be switched off at the end of 2025, says Irene Krohnsenior advisor at Telia, to Nyheter24.
At Telenor, it sounds different. They are already starting to shut down the 3G network there.
– We have gradually phased out 3G and have come quite far with it. The last one will be turned off at the end of 2025 during the same period as we turn off 2G, says Boel Bengtssonpress contact at the telecom company Telenor, for Nyheter24.

Then Tre and Tele2 dismantle the 3G network
At Tre you are more precise.
– We will finally shut down our 3G network on December 1, 2025, says Jasmine SowoodPR manager at Tre, to Nyheter24, and continues:
– Tre has two 3G networks – one on high frequencies (2,100 Mhz) and one on low frequencies (900 Mhz). We are gradually closing the network on high frequencies and today we have closed roughly 50 percent of that network without any impact on our customers. But our 3G network on low frequencies is therefore fully operational throughout the country until the first of December 2025, so our customers have 3G coverage until this date.
Tele2 says that all the mentioned telecom companies, except Tre, cooperate with the shutdown of the 3G network.
– All operators are responsible for shutting down their respective networks, but in Tele2’s case we share 2G (GSM) and 3G networks with Telia and Telenor, so of course we cooperate there. Our plan is for both the 2G and 3G networks to be switched off by the end of 2025, says Mariana Prieto Abarcapress contact at Tele2, to Nyheter24.
When it comes to informing customers, Telia, Telenor and Tele2 work in the same way.
– All operators are and have launched the BytNät.nu campaign with the help of the industry organization Techsverige. where we work together to inform both private individuals and companies what they should think about and do before the network is closed, Abarca tells Nyheter24.
Neither Telia, Tele2 nor Telenor have set a date for when the final shutdown will be completed.
