Thefts of car catalytic converters continue to increase

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

Theft of catalytic converters from cars continues to rise, new figures show. In northern Sweden, there has been a wave of thefts in recent weeks.

Car owner Lennart Henriksson in Östersund has had his car’s catalytic converter stolen twice in the last month alone. Despite the fact that on the last occasion he had the car locked in the garage.

– If they steal one more time, I don’t know if I will sell the car, says Lennart Henriksson to TV4 Nyheterna.

According to statistics from Larmtjänst, which has compiled figures from the country’s insurance companies, the theft of catalytic converters is on the rise and last year reached the highest level since they started measuring seriously three years ago. 7791 attacks were reported last year. But there is also a large number of darkness.

– It is usually about 30 percent higher than what the insurance companies report in, says Christoffer Morén, crime coordinator at the police in the North region.

In the past, it was mostly foreign leagues that wreaked havoc, but according to the police, it is now about Swedes who go around and steal.
