Theater Golden Lion awarded to Brazilian Christiane Jatahy

The Brazilian director and author Christiane Jatahy was crowned this Monday, January 31 by the prestigious Golden Lion of the Venice Biennale for all of her theatrical work. Jatahy is one of the most original figures in the wave of theater that has swept across the Atlantic and regenerated the European scene in recent decades. Elcio Ramalho reached her by phone in Rio to get her reaction after the announcement of the prize.

I am really very happy with this price, explains Christiane Jatahy. I consider it as the confirmation of a recognition of my artistic work that I have been developing for a very long time. It also gives me the opportunity to continue to think about the present, but also the future. So, I say thank you very much for this award! And also for all the support I received for a very long time, aid received from French theaters, but also from theaters in Europe, and in Brazil, because it all started here. »

From March 5, Christiane Jatahya will present at the Théâtre l’Odéon in Paris her play Between dog and wolf for which was invited in 2021 to the Festival d’Avignon.
