The Zouweboezem near Ameide is in better condition than many

The condition of many protected nature reserves continues to deteriorate. To combat the consequences of “long-term neglect and overdue maintenance”, a more coherent approach is needed, including attention to issues such as desiccation, water quality and climate change. The Ecological Authority writes this in an advice to outgoing Minister Christianne van der Wal (Nature and Nitrogen).

The authority, which is tasked with advising provinces on their plans to protect nitrogen-sensitive nature, issued more than seventy advisories to nature reserves throughout the Netherlands. Of all those nature reserves, there are only three that are doing reasonably well. The Zouweboezem is one of them.
