“The world ran out of pink”

In an interview in Architectural Digest, director Gerwig and designer Sarah Greenwood talk about how they went about building Barbieland, a world almost entirely painted in fluorescent (luminous) pink, writes The Guardian. According to Greenwood, the filming made the color a global commodity: “The world ran out of pink,” she explains.

Lauren Proud, head of paint company Rosco, in turn tells the Los Angeles Times that the company supplied all the pink paint it had – but that the shortage was also due to covid-19 and the weather in Texas 2021 that had affected production.

For Greta Gerwig, color was decisive.

— I wanted the pink colors to be very bright and everything to be almost too much, says Gerwig, explaining that she didn’t want to forget what made her love Barbie when she was a little girl.

Gerwig debuted in 2017 with the acclaimed and Oscar-nominated film “Lady Bird,” about a teenage girl in Sacramento and her battle against a bitter, single mother.
