The whole world is closely following the steps taken by Turkey in the defense industry. UAVs and SİHAs, which have wide repercussions on a global scale, also take an active role in the Russia-Ukraine war. While the process for Baykar to establish a UAV factory in Ukraine continued, striking evaluations came from NATO. David Van Weel, NATO’s Deputy Secretary General for Emerging Security Challenges, emphasized the importance of artificial intelligence in wars and talked about the work carried out in this context at NATO. Weel’s words about the impact of Turkish UAVs drew attention. Details from Weel’s statements are as follows…
“WAR IS WAITED ALSO WITH MODERN TECHNOLOGY”
Speaking to Anadolu Agency (AA), Weel said that since the Ukraine-Russia war began, the role and importance of cyber attacks in the war has been discussed.
Stating that vehicles such as bombs, planes and tanks used in the Ukraine-Russia war fall into the category of “traditional warfare”, Weel said that the war is also carried out with modern technology.
“TURKEY’S UAVS PLAY A GREAT ROLE IN UKRAINE”
Weel mentioned that Turkey’s unmanned aerial vehicles played a major role in the Ukraine-Russia war, “I think they (Turkish UAVs in Ukraine) are really good examples of innovation that can be made in modern wars.” said.
Weel, Deputy Secretary General, said:
“If you compare unmanned aerial vehicles with a state-of-the-art warplane, there will be a huge inconsistency. The UAV is much cheaper and has less capability. But it provides a great concrete example depending on where you are in the war.”
AI WILL PLAY A ROLE IN THE FUTURE OF WAR
Weel stated that developing technologies will come into play gradually and will play a role in the future of war.
Noting that technology should be developed in accordance with values and norms, Weel said:
“That’s what we’re trying to do with NATO. To provide a platform where states can discuss what is responsible use of new technologies. So we designed an AI strategy for the use of AI and defense-security, where all allies can use AI in a war zone.” “We agree that there are rules that must be followed first. We did the same for autonomous systems and robots.”
Weel stressed the importance of sticking to values when advocating for people, noting that there are currently some strict limitations on what is possible based on technology.
Stating that how countries use technologies are closely followed, Weel emphasized the importance of using technology responsibly.
RESPONSIBLE USE OF TECHNOLOGY
Stating that there were wars centuries ago and war is a threat to humanity in general, Weel stated that the developing technology as a war threat depends on its use.
Referring to the fact that artificial intelligence can protect against possible dangers, Weel said that the use of technology can be beneficial if it is used without any discrimination or other destruction among civilians.
HIGHLIGHTS OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
Answering the question about whether artificial intelligence can be kept under control, Weel noted that the trick of this technology is editable, but responsible use principles come into play here.
“We made it clear that AI should be legal,” Weel said. He said that it must be proven that it is an artificial intelligence that works in accordance with the law.
Noting that the law must prove that artificial intelligence is free of prejudices, Weel said that it is known that artificial intelligence tends to have a bias against women or minorities.
