The wonderful image of Börje Salming is spreading throughout Sweden after the icon’s passing: “I didn’t know this”

Börje Salming has left us.
But we must never forget his great deeds in his life.
Over the weekend, a picture from 1993 was spread all over Sweden that shows what a fantastic person Börje was.

It was during Thursday evening that the sad news came Börje Salming fell asleep. The hockey icon turned 71 years old and finally his body gave up after fighting for several months against the terrible nerve disease ALS.

In the days following the death notice, the entire Swedish hockey family poured in tributes and beautiful words for Börje. Many have told about personal memories and encounters with the legend and described how he influenced them over the years.

For Salming was not only a truly unique hockey player who paved the way for the Swedes in the world’s best hockey league, the NHL. But he was also a fantastic fellow human being who always looked out for and cared about the weak in society.

Tried the picture

He treated everyone the same way and was a real role model both on and off the ice, as many people have testified to. During the weekend, a picture of Börje Salming was also spread around Sweden and became extremely popular on Twitter, see it below.

The picture is from 1993 and shows how a younger Börje chose to run in the Stockholm Marathon. He then completed the entire 4.2 mile race in a wheelchair(!) to raise awareness and support the disabled in society.

“Be a hero”

On Twitter, he is hugely praised for his fantastic initiative, see the picture below.
“What a person then,” writes one user.
“Börje Salming is legendary in everything he did, he gave 100% in everything,” writes another.
“He was a hero for the weak and vulnerable! He had an enormously big heart,” writes a third.

The picture of Börje in a wheelchair was taken by the photographer Tomas Oneborg and the person who posted the picture on Twitter is so happy that it got so much attention. Both for the photographer “Oni’s” sake, when he died of the coronavirus in 2020, but also because this side of Börje Salming lives on after his death.
“I didn’t know about this. What an incredible athlete and, according to hearsay – person,” wrote one on Twitter.
“Salming only gets hotter and hotter the more you read about him!”, writes another.
“Now I didn’t know Börje. But I wish we could see more of this in our society today. Humanity and solidarity. We miss you!”, writes a third.
