The Witcher Season 3 starring Henry Cavill is the best yet – but it suffers from 2 major problems from the start

The Witcher Season 3 starring Henry Cavill is the best

Yes, The Witcher is worth again. After a disappointing Season 2, Netflix’s fantasy workhorse bounces back in Season 3 and becomes Henry Cavill’s best performance yet.

In the Moviepilot podcast, my colleague Lisa Ludwig and I discuss what makes the new episodes so good. And why the two issues have nothing to do with Henry Cavill’s departure after Season 3.

  • Two problems tarnish The Witcher Season 3 – it’s still the best season yet

Two very specific problems have accompanied the series for a long time. They’re well-known annoyances of the Netflix series, and they continue to spoil viewing pleasure in Season 3. We’re talking about non-serious CGI and the Disorientation in the world of The Witcher.

Heavily choreographed sword fights irritate with CGI blood. Cheap-looking monsters that don’t fit the well-equipped The Witcher setting at all spoil bombastic action scenes. Creatures design is awesome, scary and disgusting. However, the credibility of the computer-generated effects is lacking, which takes away any tension from the fights.

The temporal and spatial orientation was also a major criticism of The Witcher from the start. Season 1 in particular artificially complicated the story with multiple timelines. In Season 3, the story is more straightforward, but the basic problem is still not solved. We have no map to orientate ourselves on. No display of city names. Nilfgard, Redania, Cintra and the Isle of Thanedd remain difficult to tell apart.

The third season still inspires us. Geralt (Henry Cavill), Yennefer (Anya Chalotra) and Ciri (Freya Allan) as charming blended family are the heart of the new episodes. In terms of romantic relationships and queer representation, Season 3 also steps up a gear. The chemistry of the actors and the sexual tension are palpable.

Narratively, the new season is far more focused than its two predecessors. All parties want to get their hands on Ciri – whether kingdom, empire, brotherhood, the wild hunt or the elves. Ciri carries the elder blood within her, which promises her and thus her allies almost infinite power.

The first five episodes of The Witcher season 3 have been streaming since June 29, 2023. Episode 6, 7 and 8 of season 3 are from the July 27, 2023 available on Netflix. Liam Hemsworth will play Geralt in Season 4.
