After Season 3 of Netflix’s The Witcher, nothing will ever be the same again. It is the last to star as Henry Cavill as the witcher Geralt of Rivia before Liam Hemsworth recasts the role. Now the first 5 episodes of Season 3 have started on Netflix. And we’ll tell you if it’s worth going on a monster hunt with Henry Cavill one last time.
The Witcher Season 3: Ironically, Henry Cavill’s last Geralt appearance is his best
Henry Cavill is Geralt. Season 3 backs that up once again with a fantastic development for his character. He has long since left behind the grumpy and monosyllabic witcher of season 1. Now Cavill shows completely new emotional facets of the white wolf. He skilfully finds the balance between worried father substitute and ice-cold butcher. one or the other”hmm” must not be missing.
A major criticism for many book fans was Yennefer von Vengerberg’s (Anya Chalotra) development in The Witcher Season 2. Her loss of power and corruption at the hands of the Voleth Meir entity was a controversial departure from the original. Season 3 is different. While the sorceress discovers her motherly feelings for Ciri (Freya Allan), which several powerful parties are after, it is above all the gradual reconstruction of her relationship with Geralt that is one of the great strengths of the season.

The Witcher family reunites in Season 3
The witcher family dynamic finally takes center stage in Season 3 and brings us many touching moments. Of course, this also includes our favorite bard Delphinium (Joey Batey), who gets a touching story with the Redanian prince Radovid (Hugh Skinner). In the course of the 5 episodes, we all grow fond of the four main characters – which could be broken again as the series progresses. For Part 2 of Season 3, a devastating battle is announced, which could mean a renewed separation of the laboriously built family unit.
The Witcher Season 3: Netflix’s fantasy series is more complex, serious and much closer to the book
The complicated relationship of this unusual family of choice, the mystery of a powerful evil sorcerer and Yennefer’s reluctant return to Aretuza’s magic politics to protect Ciri form the plot framework of the first five episodes.
Many fans of Andrzej Sapkowski’s witcher novels were annoyed by some radical changes and deviations in season 2. Season 3 adapts the book The Age of Contempt * with much closer to the literature and convinces with a complex story with many characters and subplots.
But that also means that anyone who is no longer familiar with places and names from the Witcher universe should take a small crash course before The Witcher Season 3. The Netflix series is not (anymore) for fantasy beginners. But the homework is worth it.

Date night with Geralt and Yennefer
Above all the gripping midseason finale is a surprise. Not only because of the many story twists, but above all because of the playful staging. With leaps in time and clever changes in perspective, exciting intrigue games unfold bit by bit at a ball. Unfortunately, the end on an abrupt cliffhanger is a bit frustrating and makes us eagerly await the last 3 episodes.
We already know another problem from the previous two seasons: Often sterile sets (a bank set from The Witcher: Blood Origin was even recycled) and costumes that are far too clean leave the Netflix series not always very high quality look. The look no longer does justice to the increasingly serious and dark fantasy saga.
Nevertheless, the positive impression prevails. With its complex story and strong character developments, Season 3 is already after a few episodes the best of the Netflix series. The impending farewell to Henry Cavill will of course be even more difficult.
