The Witcher is headed for Ciri controversy in season 4 – and Freya Allan doesn’t want that to change

Season 3 of the Netflix series The Witcher doesn’t just end Henry Cavill’s Geralt era. It also represents a turning point in the fantasy story for Season 4. In Andrzej Sapkowski’s fiction, the three main characters now go their separate ways for a longer period of time. With the appearance of six new characters, the gang of rats, The Witcher is already laying the foundation for what happens next in season 4 for Ciri – who from now on poses as “Falka”.

The Witcher now faces an enormous challenge in Season 4. Ciri’s dark story from the books is namely extremely controversial. Will the Netflix series also go this way? In the Moviepilot interview, actress Freya Allan talks about her complicated feelings about Ciri’s future and has a clear demand.

The following are spoilers for the book template for The Witcher.

The Witcher controversy explains: This is what happens between Ciri and the rats in the template

The Rat Gang is a group of young thieves who found each other as outcasts and victims of war. They happily roam from town to town, robbing the rich, sometimes giving to the poor, and partying till you drop. And sometimes they kill too.

The fact that Ciri aka Falka even joins these violent criminals with a penchant for killing alienated many fans of the book. But the biggest controversy is yet to come: Geralt’s foster daughter marries Love affair with Rat member Mistle (Christelle Elwin) – after Mistle rapes her while completely defenseless.

It’s a pretty dark and unhealthy relationship that Ciri indulges in because she just craves love“, is Freya Allan’s interpretation of Ciri’s decision, to stay with Mistle after the sexual assault.

We caught up with the Ciri actress for an interview ahead of the Season 3 launch and not only spoke to her about the departure from Henry Cavill, but also asked if the Ciri controversy will find its way into Season 4:

The subject is very complex. There are a lot of different opinions and interpretations of Ciri’s story from the books. But I already know that I’m going to talk about it extensively [Showrunnerin Lauren Hissrich] will speak. It also depends on how Netflix wants to portray that story arc.

There’s no question that Ciri’s queer relationship with Mistle will also feature in the Netflix series. However, it is still unclear how the relationship between the two characters will be presented in season 4. Freya Allan has a clear opinion on this.

Ciri actress Freya Allan doesn’t want any trivialization in The Witcher season 4

The Witcher shouldn’t shy away from telling the intricate facets of the love between Ciri and Mistle, which is more toxic than romantic in the books. Denying that their connection stems from a traumatic assault would be a mistake, believes Freya Allan:

I find this somber story should be presented as written. As hard as that may be. I will definitely work towards it.

We will probably only find out in season 4 whether Freya Allan can prevail in the end. But how does she personally feel about having to play this complex and dark side of her character in front of the camera?

It is frightening, to be honest. Because it’s such a serious subject. But that’s what you’re looking for as an actress. Sometimes you want to explore such places and challenge yourself emotionally. I’m excited but also scared.

Of course, considering the template, Ciri’s experiences in Season 4 won’t just consist of a toxic relationship. We’ll see entirely new facets of the character and how she navigates the war-torn world without her witcher parents, Geralt (played by Liam Hemsworth from then on) and Yennefer (Anya Chalotra). Ciri must find out who she really wants to be. And she doesn’t always make the best decisions.

This is exactly what makes the series future particularly exciting for Freya Allan: “I’m really thankful that I got the story from the books in Season 4 a new challenge and a whole new experience allows.

When does The Witcher season 4 start on Netflix?
