At the first big prize of the Oscar season, David defeated several Goliaths. Because the historical drama Brady Corbet’s brutalist won the main category of Best Film (Drama) at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards – and that’s ahead of competitors like Dune: Part Two and Like a Complete Unknown, which have many times the budget and star power.
The Brutalist and Emilia Pérez named best films
On Monday night, the film and series awards were presented, which serve as a benchmark for the upcoming Academy Awards ceremony. In addition to the 215-minute epic The Brutalist, the gangster musical Emilia Pérez by Jacques Audiard was the big film winner of the evening. The unusual story of a drug lord who undergoes gender reassignment surgery and lives as a woman under a new name was not only named best film in the comedy/musical category, where it left competition like Wicked behind. Emilia Pérez also received the award for Best Non-English Language Film.
The two films also dominated the acting category, collecting Golden Globes for Adrien Brody (The Brutalist, Lead Actor Drama), Director (The Brutalist) and Supporting Actress (Zoe Saldana, Emilia Pérez). The Brazilian Fernanda Torres caused a surprise when she received the award for best leading actress in a drama for the factual drama I’m Still Here about a woman whose husband disappears during the military dictatorship. However, Demi Moore was awarded the best leading actress in comedy or musical, whose comeback with the horror satire The Substance is still on course for an Oscar.

Here was the literary adaptation Shogun the clear winner of the eveningwith awards for Best Drama, Best Actor in a Drama Series (Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai) and Best Supporting Actor Tadanobu Asano. In Germany the series streams on Disney+. Other top prizes went to the Max series Hacks (comedy) and Netflix’s Baby Reindeer (miniseries).
