The whole world is writing about Sweden having the first mpox case outside of Africa

Sweden ended up in the world’s focus on Thursday.

The reason: not the surströmming premiere – but the first case of the new mpox variant outside of Africa.

State epidemiologist Magnus Gisslén barely had time to say “it’s more contagious” before media around the world started writing about Sweden.

The government’s and the Public Health Agency’s press conference began at 5 p.m. on Thursday afternoon. The message was that the first case of the new mpox variant outside of Africa had been found in Sweden.

Just minutes later, the news traveled around the world.

The person is said to have been infected during a trip to one of the countries in Africa where there is a major outbreak of mpox clade 1. The new form of the virus appears to spread more easily through routine close contact, including sexual contact, and has spread from the Congo to several neighboring countries .

Is there a vaccine

Mpox usually causes flu-like symptoms and blisters on the body, and is fatal in rare cases. Before the summer, the government tasked FHM with ensuring the availability of vaccines in Sweden.
