The 23-year-old defender scored the only goal in the World Cup final against England and Spain got to celebrate their first World Cup gold on the women’s side.
But after jubilation and celebration came the devastating news that her father had passed away.
Something that the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) announced on Sunday evening.
“The RFEF deeply regrets having to inform that Olga Carmona’s father has passed away,” writes the Spanish federation.
“The footballer received the sad news after the World Cup final. We send our deepest condolences to Olga and her family in this moment of deep pain. We love you Olga, you are historic in Spanish football.”
The Real Madrid player – who also scored the winner in the semi-final against Sweden – dedicated his goal to the mother of one of his best friends who recently passed away and showed off an undershirt with ‘Merchi’ written on it.
— I want to say that the victory is dedicated to the mother of one of my best friends who died recently. I celebrated the goal with that shirt, she told Spanish La 1 shortly after the match.
