The water returns after leakage

What was feared to be a new water leak at Nyköping and Oxelösund does not seem to have been. And more and more people are now getting their water back.

– As far as we know, everyone has got water back, says Annica Nilsson, communicator at Nyköping Municipality.

The main water pipe that burst during the night until Thursday has been repaired. Between 30,000 and 40,000 households and businesses were affected by the leak, which left large parts of the municipalities of Nyköping and Oxelösund completely without water.

On Friday, it was feared that a new leak had occurred, when the water level dropped again. However, this may have been due to the unusual amount of water used.

– We have not found any traces of any new water leak, but it may have been because it was a very large withdrawal of water, that it was what caused the water tower to be emptied again, says Annica Nilsson.

– But it was refilled during the evening so we do not think it was a leak quite simply.

The system is filling up. It is still a little lower pressure than usual, and there is no forecast for when the water capacity may be back to normal levels.

Residents in the municipalities of Nyköping and Oxelösund are still encouraged to boil water to be drunk or used for cooking. This is because a water leak can lead to the presence of bacteria, viruses or parasites in the water. It is also urged to be frugal with the water.

Schools and preschools in Oxelösund and Nyköping had to be closed during Thursday and Friday. The plan is for them to be able to reopen on Tuesday, after the holidays.
