Fodor’s has released its annual “no-list” of destinations to avoid in 2025. Many of these places, such as Barcelona, Mallorca and the Canary Islands, suffer from excessive tourism, which negatively affects both locals and visitors.
The digital travel magazine Fodor’s has released its annual “no-list” of destinations that travelers should avoid in 2025. The destinations on the list are often popular for good reason. They have nice beaches, good food and are culturally exciting and significant. The reason they make the list is because they are simply too popular and thus “collapse of their own popularity”. The travel magazine points out that they are not calling for a boycott, but instead want to draw attention to the challenges these destinations face in order to preserve them for future generations.
Dissatisfaction among local residents
According to the site, domestic governments tend to prioritize economic gains from tourism over the well-being of the local population. Increased housing and living costs, full beaches and a strained infrastructure are some examples of negative consequences. In recent years, there have also been several examples of local residents also airing their discontent and protesting against the government and tourism.
Swedes’ favorites on the list
The 2025 list contains several popular Swedish travel destinations. Spain takes up the most places in Europe where “the locals don’t want you”. This applies to Barcelona, Mallorca and the Canary Islands. Other places in Europe mentioned are Venice, Lisbon, Sicily and the north coast of Scotland.
