The Walking Dead sequel starring Daryl Dixon steals from the original but with a really good twist

This year, two new spin-off series continue the stories of popular characters from the ending horror series The Walking Dead. What’s next for Daryl after his controversial decision in the final? That’s what the upcoming series The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, which sends the taciturn loner to France, explores.

Before the new The Walking Dead series starts in the USA in September, the broadcaster AMC has already published the first 10 minutes. Unfortunately, the preview is not available in Germany, but we’ll tell you what’s happening and how Daryl’s new adventure cleverly copies the beginning of Rick Grimes’ story.

The Daryl Dixon series begins like The Walking Dead did

13 years ago the story of The Walking Dead began when police officer Rick Grimes woke up after an accident in a hospital and a radically changed world. The new spin-off series takes this beginning as a model. Now it’s Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) who regains consciousness on a capsized boat in the middle of the sea and awakens in a completely strange world: in southern France.

It’s almost funny when he stands confused in front of a way sign full of French terms and realizes that he’s somehow crossed an entire ocean. And as befits the monosyllabic Daryl, his own The Walking Dead series remains surprisingly silent for the first few minutes – until he finds a radio on a boat in the port of Marseille and sends a message:

My name is Daryl Dixon. I come from a place called Commonwealth. This is in America. i was looking for something And only found problems. If I don’t make it back, I want them to know I tried. I will keep trying.

Accompanied by fantastic music, a montage now shows Daryl’s lonely journey through decaying France and guides us through impressive landscapes and places, which outshine almost every setting from 11 seasons of The Walking Dead. Some highlights from Daryl’s early sightseeing tour: the post-apocalyptic port of Marseille, the Pont du Gard and the ruins of the Château des Baux.

In the next scene one of the most iconic The Walking Dead moments from the original pilot quoted with a witty variation. Like Rick Grimes, Daryl stands before a door with a warning message. Here, however, it is not the admonition”Don’t open, dead inside“, but a French lettering that precedes the “hungry” warns inside a market hall. Unfortunately, Daryl doesn’t speak any French at all and steps through.

The Walking Dead sends Daryl into battle against acid zombies

What awaits him inside the overgrown market hall is one all new and terrifying variant of undead. Unfortunately, these are not running super zombies, but some kind of acid zombies. Just a touch leaves searing wounds on Daryl’s arm.

Acid Zombies!

After a heated battle between the undead and Daryl armed with a boathook (!), the preview of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon is already over.

There is still nothing to see in the preview about the actual plot of the series about apocalypse nuns, a chosen boy and a road trip towards Paris. Nevertheless, it offers an excellent and atmospheric entry into this completely new world for Daryl Dixon. After only 10 short minutes, the anticipation of the zombie spin-off is a lot higher.

When and where can The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon be seen in Germany?

The six-episode first season of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon is scheduled to premiere on September 10, 2023 in the US on AMC. In this country, fans have to be patient a little longer. The spin-off starts in Germany At the end of the year on MagentaTV. There is no specific start date yet.

Before that, the spin-off The Walking Dead: Dead City with Maggie and Negan will be released for the first time in October 2023 on MagentaTV. Additional zombie supplies have already been taken care of. Not only will the Rick series The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live start in 2024.
