PFAS has been discussed extensively in recent years. PFAS substances can be stored for a long time over time and if you have received much of these, they can over time impair health, something The National Food Agency have been clear with.
Despite this, PFAS substances are found, among other things, in detergents, makeup and a variety of kitchen utensils.
Maria Hammarlingproject manager at Sweden’s consumers, has seen that PFAS is found in most waffle iron.
– The proposal for a broad ban on the use of PFAS in the EU is currently located with the European Chemicals Authority, ECHA. It is a long and extensive process with many different conflicts of interest, Hammarling tells News24.
In several countries, however, there are legislation that limits or prohibits the use of PFAS completely in certain products.
– There are national legislation in, for example, Denmark and France prohibiting PFAS in certain product groups, such as textiles and cosmetics.
In Sweden, however, they have not come as far. Hammarling explains that there is also no proposal up in Parliament. Products containing PFAS will then remain in the Swedish market and it becomes increasingly difficult to know whether they contain the subject or not.
A review from Sweden’s consumers Shows that several companies have become even more diffuse in their descriptions since 2023.
Instead of explicitly printing that the product contains PFAS, many companies are hiding behind concepts such as “release coating”.
-Waffle iron with ceramic coating or cast iron knows we are better pfas-free alternatives, Hammarling concludes.
