The volcano Etna has erupted.

Lava is flowing down the mountain in Sicily – and parts of the airport have been forced to close.

– It’s a fun thing, as long as it doesn’t derail, says Swedish Jan Eliasson.

Ash is raining over the city of Catania from the lava after Mount Etna erupted on Thursday.

A five kilometer high cloud of smoke has risen into the sky.

Authorities have issued an orange alert following Etna’s eruption and a red alert for the Stromboli volcano.

Parts of the airspace over the airport have been forced to close, local media reports.

Jan Eliasson and his family are on location in Sicily.

– We are here on holiday and had just eaten at a restaurant when we went out and saw lots of people standing and watching. At first we thought they were checking some kind of performance. Then we saw that they filmed and photographed the volcano, he says.

The family arrived in Sicily on Tuesday.

– It was a real cloud of smoke. The lava spurted. It’s a fun thing, as long as it doesn’t derail, says Jan Eliasson.

Jesper Ahlberg is also on site in Sicily.

– It feels a little sad that the airport is closing. But I won’t be home until Saturday, so it should be calm, he says.
