In Senegal, the vote counting commission for the department of Dakar published this Thursday, January 27, its provisional official results after the local elections on Sunday. They confirm the large victory of the opposition candidate, Barthélémy Dias in the capital, which once again eludes the presidential party.

The victory is final. Barthélémy Dias won 173,628 votes, against 81,015 for Abdoulaye Diouf Sarr, Minister of Health. The opposition coalition Yewwi Askan Wi won with 56% of the valid votes cast, against 26% for the presidential coalition Benno Bokk Yaakaar.

Barthélémy Dias will succeed Soham El Wardini, the outgoing mayor, who arrived at Dakar City Hall in 2018 after the conviction of Khalifa Sall in particular for “scam on the last audiences”. Dismissed by the Yewwi Askan Wi coalition during the investitures, Soham El Wardini presented herself under the colors of the Union citoyenne-Bunt Bi party. She gets 4.4% of the vote. As for Doudou Wade, figure of the PDS involved in the Wallu Senegal coalition, he won just under 5% of the vote.

For this election, which was held by direct universal suffrage (a novelty), the participation rate in Dakar was 46%. A rate ” very satisfaying according to Théodore Chérif Monteil of Union citoyenne-Bunt Bi who came to attend the publication of the results.
