Up to 400 young people had then gathered in the Macedonian Association’s premises on Backaplan, which was intended for a maximum of 150 people, to celebrate Halloween when the arranged fire broke out before midnight on 29 October 1998.
63 young people aged 12–20 died. 213 people were injured, 50 of them seriously. Four young men were later convicted of aggravated arson.
