The Veilguard is too colorful? With a single option you get a dark game

Dragon Age: The Veilguard has faced one criticism since its announcement: for many people, the graphics are simply too colorful. On the PC this can be changed thanks to a setting.

What’s the problem? The predecessors of Dragon Age: The Veilguard were visually darker and more adult. In comparison, the colorful and somewhat comic-like look of the fourth part bothered many long-time fans when it was announced.

Now the game has been released and comparisons are being made to films by Disney or Pixar. The characters don’t have realistic faces and the color scheme just isn’t dark enough. While there are a few ways to at least make your own character in the editor a little more attractive, on the PC a simple trick helps to make the game look darker overall.

With just a few clicks to a dark Dragon Age

How does the trick work? If you play on PC, you have to follow a few simple steps to get a less colorful and bright picture:

  • Quit the game and open the “Bioware” folder in your documents.
  • Open the Dragon Age: The Veilguard folder and then select “settings”.
  • Opens the ProfileOptions_profile file with a program such as Notepad.
  • Look for the entry “GstRender.UI_Bloom 1” and change the number to 0.
  • Saves and closes the file.
  • And that was it. This actually makes the game darker and more “realistic”. Only the depth of field suffers somewhat. Some players in the community have already tried the trick.

Does that satisfy the fans? User Braunb8888 shared the trick on Reddit and quickly received feedback from other players:

  • “I’ve looked at comparisons on YouTube and turning it off seems to affect the lighting and depth of field a bit. But things look much better,” writes Lucapardi.
  • “This has completely changed the look of the game and gives it a much-needed darker tone,” says blacksnowredwinter.
  • “I just tried this, it makes everything feel more grounded,” says adamserpentius.
  • “Does anyone know if there is a way to do this on the console?” asks user breosaighead.
  • Unfortunately, as of now there is no way to disable Bloom on consoles in this way.

With this simple change, the overall picture becomes a little darker and that is well received by the fans. Of course, other differences from its predecessors still remain.
