The draft resolution submitted by Algeria at the UN Security Council, which demands an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, condemns all attacks against civilians and opposes forced displacement, was put to vote.
While the UK “abstained” from voting on the draft resolution vetoed by the USA in the 15-member UNSC, 13 countries voted “yes”.
In her statement before the vote, US Permanent Representative to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, reminded that the US was negotiating with Israel, Hamas, Egypt and Qatar for the release of prisoners, and stated that if an agreement is reached in this area, there will be a 6-week break in hostilities.
Greenfield stated that diplomacy takes time and that the facts on the ground should not be ignored, and that Algeria’s draft resolution will negatively affect the ongoing negotiations.
Stating that the USA has submitted a new draft resolution, Greenfield said, “Let’s act in the right way at the right time.” said.
“EVERY PALESTINE IS THE TARGET OF DEATH AND GENOCIDE”
Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Amar Bendjama, said in a statement before the vote: “Opposing the draft resolution means supporting the brutal violence and collective punishment to which the Palestinian people are subjected.” he said.
Pointing out that every Palestinian is the target of “death and genocide”, Bendjama said, “How many more innocent lives need to be sacrificed before the Council calls for a ceasefire?” posed the question.
Russia’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, recalled that his country called for a ceasefire on October 16, 2023, but it was not accepted, and said, “The cost of inaction is more than 28 thousand deaths. The collective responsibility for this lies with the Western countries of the UN Security Council.” he said.
ALGERIA’S DRAFT DECISION
The draft resolution submitted by Algeria demanded an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza.
The bill condemned all attacks against civilians and also opposed the forced displacement of the Palestinian people.
The draft resolution called on all parties to comply with international humanitarian law and demanded unhindered humanitarian aid to all parts of Gaza.
In the draft resolution demanding the release of all captives, there was also reference to the interim injunction decisions taken by the International Court of Justice against Israel on January 26.
NEW DRAFT INITIATIVE FROM THE USA
The US draft, obtained by AA, warns that “under the current conditions, a land attack on Rafah will cause great harm to civilians and lead to their displacement.”
The draft resolution warns that this will cause serious regional and security problems and states, “This attack should not take place under current conditions.” The expression is used.
The word “ceasefire” was used for the first time in the US bill, stating, “We support a temporary ceasefire in Gaza as soon as possible if all captives are released.” message is given.
- The US has vetoed ceasefire calls before
The USA had previously vetoed the draft resolutions regarding Gaza presented at the UNSC on October 16, 18, 25, 2023 and December 8, 2023.
The USA was one of the 10 countries that voted “no” for the draft resolution requesting an urgent humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza, where 153 countries voted “yes” at the UN General Assembly on December 13, 2023.
