The US state apparatus can be shut down

The state apparatus in the United States risks shutting down completely if the politicians cannot agree on a new budget.

On the night of Sunday, the fiscal year ends in the United States. In the absence of a new state budget, the politicians will vote on a temporary 45-day budget on Saturday evening. If it is not voted through, all but critical federal activity will be halted.

Employees in critical industries such as the judiciary and defense may be left without pay. It is not unusual for the state apparatus to be shut down in connection with failed budget negotiations. Since 1981, it has happened a total of 14 times.
