The United States has shot down a Chinese balloon off the coast of North Carolina that it suspected was being used for espionage.
The news agency AP and Reuters report on the matter. According to the news agency AP, the parts of the ball are currently being collected. The Pentagon has said in the past that it plans to investigate the object and determine if it is indeed an aircraft, as China claims.
American officials previously planned to shoot down the ball while it was flying over the Atlantic Ocean.
China said on Friday that it was a weather observation balloon that lost its course with the air currents and did not obey the controls.
In the United States, instead, it was estimated that the balloon would possibly monitor ballistic missile silos located in Montana.
Chinese football in the United States has caused friction in the relations between the great powers in recent days. For example, the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken canceled his planned arrival in China on Sunday because of the balloon.
