The US is ready to continue mediating between the warring parties in Sudan, but says it must then be serious about maintaining a ceasefire.

“When the forces are clear by their actions that they are serious about maintaining the ceasefire, the United States and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia are prepared to continue to facilitate the suspended discussions to find a negotiated solution to this conflict,” said a State Department spokesperson.

Negotiations between the parties were suspended on Wednesday after accusations from both sides of violating the ceasefire.

Fighting between the army, led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), led by General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, has been going on for six weeks. The armed struggle for power has mainly taken place in the capital Khartoum and in the Darfur province in western Sudan.

Over 1,800 people are estimated to have died in the fighting. According to the UN, the conflict has led to over a million internally displaced people, and 350,000 have fled abroad.
