“Better prevent and manage obesity in France”: the 90-page report was submitted to François Braun in April 2023. Since then, it has been on the desk of the Minister of Health, where it seems to be gathering dust. To the great dismay of specialists in this pathology, who have been waiting since the end of 2022 for the launch of a new “obesity roadmap”, intended to put into music the State’s policy against this evil.
“Everything is written in the report, there is no need for additional reflection, we must move forward now”, slips an expert. The priority? The development of a healthcare offering in the city for people with moderate obesity. Overwhelmed, the specialized centers at the hospital only take care of patients with severe obesity. Reimbursement of consultations with dieticians and liberal psychologists therefore appears essential to support others, who are a little less obese, and help them, if not to lose weight, at least not to gain any more weight.
The other emergency: prevention. The arrival of new anti-obesity drugs makes it more necessary than ever. If they offer a remedy to people already affected, we cannot imagine that they are the only answer to this scourge. Not only because the finances of Health Insurance would be shaken. But also because no one should be satisfied with seeing more and more people injecting themselves with medication for life, against a pathology that could have been avoided.
