Camping in the summer is a tradition for many Swedes – and in recent years it has become record popular.

In the summer of 2022, the number of guest nights amounted to a whopping 17.1 million.

Many travel long distances to finally land with their motorhome or caravan at their favorite campsite.

But in addition to traffic rules that are documented in the Swedish law book, there are certain, more diffuse camping rules to keep an eye on, which Expressen was the first to write about.

They describe the campsites as small communities, where routines, norms and unwritten rules apply. Of course, the “long-timers” – those who spend the whole summer at the campsite – have the best knowledge of these. Some even enjoy themselves so much that they never move away, but stay all year round.

According to Malin Mellstrandone of the owners of the camping site Hollistay, the long-timers are often helpful.

– Then some may think they have more rights at “their campsite”. If a new owner takes over and wants to change things, then there could be a rebellion, she says The Express.

One of the long-term campers at Sibbarp’s campsite in Malmö tells the newspaper that “foreigners”, the term for campers who stay for a shorter period, tend to break an unwritten rule:

– It happens that foreigners go onto people’s plots. An unwritten rule is that you don’t go on other people’s plots. Then you can quickly get scolded.
