The middle seat gets double armrests

Many people think that traveling by air is expensive and cumbersome. Flying economy can sometimes be uncomfortable as the seats and legroom are limited. Not to mention screaming children, airplane food and the need for the mobile phone to be on airplane mode.

On Tiktok, voices have been raised about how you should sit on the plane to make the journey as pleasant as possible for yourself and your fellow passengers. In this case, it is about who has the right to which armrest.

Several influencers and creators point out that in cases where there are three seats in width, the person in the middle is entitled to both armrests. The person furthest from the window has the right to the armrest by the window, the person in the middle has the right to both armrests next to them, and the person sitting at the far end of the aisle has the armrest facing the aisle.

One of them is the Tiktok influencer Mathilda “Wild Mathilda” Strömstedt who posted a video about this which at the time of writing has over 600,000 views and 245 comments.

“When there are three seats in a row: the person sitting in the middle gets both armrests, the person sitting by the window gets the window and an armrest, the person sitting at the far end gets an armrest and can stretch their legs. But the person sitting in the middle, both get armrests,” she says in the clip.

Sparked debate in the comments section

The unwritten rule has caused several people to react in the comments section. There are scattered bursts between those who agree with the rule and those who oppose it.

Here are some comments:

“All seats cost the same in a row, so whoever takes the armrest first owns it, not automatically whoever sits in the middle.”

“Well, the one in the middle has it worst, we’re human, we have to take care of the one who gets a little worse off.”

“If someone asks me to get both armrests, they get them, but that’s not a rule for me.”

“So if both people war the one sitting in the middle reasons that way, shouldn’t the middle person get any armrest?”

“That’s how it can be, if you’re stupid and don’t pre-book the right seat, you’re the one to blame.”
