Uganda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) will not have its mandate extended in the country. It then stated that Ugandan authorities have “the ability to monitor the promotion and defense of human rights throughout the country”.

Torture and disappearances

OHCHR has been active on the ground in Uganda since 2006. In recent years, its office in the capital Kampala has come into focus, for example, when activists have demonstrated and accused the authorities of, among other things, torture and disappearances.

In recent years, the work of many independent legal organizations has also been stopped in the country. Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has ruled since 1986.
