On Monday evening, arch-rivals Sweden and Finland clashed in the hottest World Cup match so far. It was 1-1 during regular time and during the penalty shootout, Tre Kronor proved to be the strongest when young Lucas Raymond decided with the last penalty.

Silfverberg’s gesture

Third straight Swedish victory in the hockey World Cup and for the host country Finland it was the second loss in the tournament. But what many people don’t know about is the fine act of heroism that took place on the ice in the middle of the game.

When Sweden’s captain Jakob Silfverberg saved Finland’s captain Marko Anttila from being completely run over on the ice. Because just after the tip-off before the penalty shootout, the Swede stepped in and stopped the Finn from being run over by an oncoming ice machine inside the Nokia arena.

Antilla grateful

The Finn was extremely grateful after Silfverberg’s quick-thinking action.
– He shouted: “Don’t go there”. I want to thank him for that. I was very surprised, says Anttila to the Finnish newspaper Ilta-Sanomat.

The Swedish team captain reveals what really happened on the ice during the unknown drama.
– We singled money and the ice machines were out to rinse. Then I don’t know what he did. He looked back while driving forward, the ice machine was just about to crush him. So I grabbed him, and then he saw it. Otherwise, he would have gotten a good plug from the ice machine, says Silfverberg to SportExpressen
– It wasn’t super close, but it was close.

Next up is Hungary for Tre Kronor, who are chasing their fourth straight victory in the hockey World Cup. That match is played on Thursday afternoon and Hungary in particular will be a new acquaintance for the Swedish players.
– I don’t really have any super skills, we’ll go through them after lunch today. We will go in with the same attitude as the previous matches. It is very hard work. We must be humble before the task, says Jakob Silfverberg in the interview.
