The United States supports two permanent seats on the UN

The United States proposes to create two permanent seats for African countries on the UN Security Council, reports the news agency Reuters.

In addition, the United States supports the idea of a rotating seat on the Security Council for small island states in the Pacific.

US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield told Reuters that he hoped that Thursday’s announcement “will move the matter forward so that at some point in the future we can achieve Security Council reform.”

Five of the 15 members of the UN Security Council are permanent member countries. They are Great Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States.

The US has long hoped that India, Japan and Germany would also get permanent seats.
