What is Alien: Covenant about?
Alien: Covenant is a direct sequel to 2012’s Prometheus: Dark Signs. The colony starship Covenant is on its way to a planet at the far end of the galaxy. Also on board are Daniels (Katherine Waterston) and the android Walter (Michael Fassbender). In the world they land on, they believe they have found an unexplored paradise. But a dark surprise awaits them in this seemingly peaceful place.

Why hasn’t a sequel to Alien: Covenant been made yet?
Up until Prometheus, the Alien movies tended to touch on major philosophical themes. Prometheus dealt with deep existential questions in the tech age and also with the origin of humans. The android David received more attention than the extraterrestrial beings.
Covenant continues this trend, but only partially. The film is basically split: On the one hand, it serves the classic alien show values with hard horror on a foreign planet. On the other hand, Michael Fassbender is allowed to spin completely freely as an android and unpack the very hard theories of creation philosophy. However, this mixture met with resistance from the public.
The Alien series has now been standing still for six years. Because Covenant was only a mediocre success at the box office. A sequel was a deterrent and was lost when Fox alien studios were sold to Disney. The later Alien attempts with Neill Blomkamp (District 9) as a director also failed. Alien movies won’t be hitting theaters any time soon. But …
An Alien Series Is Coming: What Is Known
The only light at the end of the tunnel for fans of the franchise is Fargo showrunner Noah Hawley’s Alien series, which has been in development for over two years and is expected to release in 2024. The big difference to the films: The series will mostly take place on earth.
