In the Somme, the Underground city of Naours, better known as the Grottes de Naours, was composed at its peak of 28 galleries and 300 chambers entirely dug by human hands in the limestone of the Picard plateau. Occupied since the Middle Ages, this underground city which served as a refuge for the inhabitants of the village during wars and invasions is recognized as one of the largest in the North of France.
