The UN Security Council calls for a ceasefire in Gaza

The United States did not use its veto and abstained from voting on the resolution demanding a ceasefire.

The UN Security Council resolution calls for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza for the first time.

The resolution could be published because none of the five permanent member states of the Council used a veto against it.

The now approved resolution calls for a ceasefire in Gaza during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Ramadan, which started on March 10, ends on April 9.

Israel’s close ally, the United States, has previously blocked the adoption of resolutions demanding a cease-fire in Gaza. This time, however, the United States did not use its veto and abstained from voting on the resolution.
