The UN has opened discussions with North Korea for Travis King

The 23-year-old American soldier Travis King was detained in North Korea on Wednesday. Now the UN has started a discussion with North Korea, reports AFP.

UN Deputy Commander Andrew Harrison stated at a press briefing that “a conversation has begun” with the Korean People’s Army, referring to the armistice agreement in place in the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea.

Travis King had served 47 days in South Korean custody after arguing with locals. He was accused, among other things, of assault.

Disciplinary action was pending in the US and he was to be flown home.

Then he took the opportunity to escape.

A witness saw him run across the border into North Korea before South Korean and US military also saw what was going on. He was then arrested in North Korea and has been imprisoned ever since.
