The UN General Assembly demanded an immediate cease fire in Gaza

On the night before Thursday, Finnish time, the UN General Assembly passed a resolution with an overwhelming majority, demanding an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Gaza.

The General Assembly approved the resolution by a vote of 158-9. Among others, the United States and Israel voted against the resolution. In addition, 13 countries abstained.

The General Assembly adopted another resolution calling on Israel to respect the mandate of UNRWA, the UN aid organization for Palestinian refugees, and to allow its activities to continue. The resolution was approved by 159-9 votes, with 11 countries abstaining.

Finland voted in favor of both resolutions. Resolutions are not binding.

A UN special committee investigating Israel’s actions said in November that Israel’s methods of warfare in Gaza meet the hallmarks of genocide.
