The future contract was prepared to meet the challenges of the 21st century.
Member States of the United Nations accepted on Sunday with 143 votes in favor and 7 against the so-called future agreement.
The countries that have signed the Future Pact commit to strengthening multilateral cooperation in order to keep up with the changing world and to protect the interests of current and future generations in the midst of ongoing crises.
Secretary General of the UN by António Guterres according to the future agreement, the aim is to revive international cooperation, which has tightened in recent years due to, among other things, the struggle between the great powers.
The future contract was prepared to meet the challenges of the 21st century. According to the UN, conflicts, climate change and the trampling of human rights are the world’s most important challenges.
The agreement also mentions nuclear weapons. The signatory states support the UN’s view that the use of nuclear weapons is not recommended.
Russia opposed the wording of the agreement and tried to get changes to it. Russia proposed that the agreement would emphasize the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of the state, but the amendment proposals presented by Russia were rejected.
In addition to Russia, Belarus, North Korea, Iran, Nicaragua, Russia, Sudan and Syria opposed the initiative.
15 states abstained.
The agreement was approved at the Future Summit held in New York.
The text contains several economic, legal and human rights commitments.
However, the document is not legally binding, which means that it does not oblige UN member states to implement the commitments mentioned in the text.
