Man-yi has culminated on the main island of Luzon, which is the Philippines’ most densely populated island. Before the storm, 250,000 people left their homes.
On Sunday, authorities continued to urge residents in coastal towns and low-lying areas to seek safety.
– I saw roof tiles flying from the houses around our building. Branches were torn from trees, says Julius Fabianes in the town of Baler to the AFP news agency.
The capital Manila is also expected to be hit by intense rain on Sunday.
So far, no deaths have been reported.
Expected to decrease in strength
The meteorologists’ forecast is that the typhoon is about to weaken in the near future, but still risks causing landslides and floods.
On its way there, the typhoon passed the eastern island of Catanduanes. There, trees were uprooted, power lines collapsed and houses were destroyed. During Sunday, sustained winds of over 50 meters per second and gusts of over 63 meters per second were measured.
More than 160 people have died in the five storms that have hit the Philippines in the past month. Thousands have become homeless and the impact on crops and livestock has been great.
